After the Nor’easter: A Good Time for a Fall Fence Check

The recent nor'easter brought plenty of rain and wind to Cape Cod, and now we're heading into October and the heart of fall.

While the storm wasn't particularly severe for most properties, wind, rain, falling branches, and changing ground conditions can make this a good time to give your fence a quick once-over.

It only takes a few minutes, and while you're at it, you can make sure everything looks ready for the colder months ahead.

Take a Walk Along Your Fence

Start by simply walking the fence line and looking for anything that seems different.

You might want to check for:

  • Loose boards or panels

  • Posts that appear to be leaning

  • Loose hardware

  • Branches or debris resting against the fence

  • Areas where soil has washed away around posts

  • Gates that aren't opening or closing normally

You don't need to assume every little change means there's a problem. The idea is simply to notice anything that may need attention before winter.

Don't Forget the Gates

Your gates are worth checking separately because they're the parts of your fence you interact with most often.

Open and close each gate and make sure it still swings smoothly and latches properly. If something has shifted slightly, you may notice it here first.

Rain and Wind Aren't the Only Reasons to Check

The recent nor'easter gives us a timely reminder, but October itself is a good time to look over your fence.

Leaves and branches begin accumulating around properties, temperatures start dropping, and winter isn't far behind. Clearing debris away from the fence and noticing small maintenance issues now can help keep your property looking cared for throughout the season.

It's also a good opportunity to step back and consider whether your current fence is still meeting your needs.

Maybe you'd like more privacy. Perhaps an aging fence is starting to show its years, or you're considering a lower-maintenance option such as vinyl fencing.
